The Recovery Model

Treatment Philosophy

When choosing an Eating Disorder center it’s important to understand the core philosophy of the program, because it will determine the type of treatment that you or your loved one receives.

Many people who call us are initially unaware that different treatment philosophies exist and are surprised by the vast differences. Below you’ll learn about the 2 main philosophies offered by various Eating Disorder Centers.

Canopy Cove’s Eating Disorder Treatment Programs are based on The Recovery Model which states that “full recovery from an Eating Disorder is possible”. For more than two decades we’ve seen full recovery take place even among those who have dealt with their Eating Disorder for years or have been elsewhere for treatment.

How Does The Recovery Model Help People Overcome Eating Disorders?

The Recovery Model facilitates lasting recovery by addressing the core causes of the Eating Disorder.

The model identifies the eating disorder as a symptom of deeper, unresolved issues. We work closely with clients to assist in identifying the underlying causes of their eating disorder as well processing the information and resolving the issues.

Once a person learns how to effectively deal with these underlying issues and the emotions they produce, the eating pattern and relationship with food stabilizes. Consequently, a person can “recover” from an eating disorder, rather than remaining in the perpetual process of recovering.

The Recovery Model Inspires Hope

The true heart of The Recovery Model is much more than behavioral change. It facilitates personal growth, encourages new perspectives, identifies and focuses on the strengths of each person, prioritizes the development of life management skills and introduces new coping skills. The ultimate goal is to equip the person to live free from the control of an Eating Disorder. By creating an environment where full recovery is known to be possible, clients are able to experience hope. We provide a safe space for clients to just be who they really are, not who they have come to believe they are.

Benefits of The Recovery Model

Perhaps the benefits of The Recovery Model are best explained in the following statement, “The addiction/medical model treats the disorder; The Recovery Model treats the person.”

The goal of our treatment is not to treat the Eating Disorder but to treat the person who is experiencing the Eating Disorder and to help them to have better life. That’s why The Recovery model is “client centered” and “client-driven.” Each client has the starring role and the treatment team is the supporting cast.

A Dramatic Difference

One of the most dramatic differences between The Recovery Model and other models is the view on recovery. The Recovery Model used at Canopy Cove states that full recovery is possible.  Other philosophy models such as the addiction model and medical model believe that recovery is not possible and that a person will always be in bondage to the disorder.

Recovery Model

  • Interest centered on the person
  • Strengths based
  • Growth and discovery
  • Transformation of self
  • Customized treatment plan based on needs
  • Full recovery is possible
  • Seeks to address and resolve root causes

Addiction or Medical Model

  • Interest centered on the Disorder
  • Treatment Based
  • Treatment is solution
  • Return to a “normal” state
  • Predetermined treatment plan
  • Recovery not possible, focus on maintenance
  • Focuses on symptom management

Success with The Recovery Model

The Recovery Model has been successfully used for over 25 years and instills hope for the client and their family. The focus on full recovery has a positive impact on the attitudes of clients and has been shown to enhance the outcomes in the recovery process. Because we know that full recovery is possible, we encourage each person seeking a treatment center to choose one with a philosophy such as The Recovery Model, which supports the goal of full recovery.
