A Customized Treatment Plan

Each person we treat is unique and receives a detailed evaluation and a customized treatment approach tailored to their specific needs. As part of the admission process, each client has a detailed evaluation by members of our multi-disciplinary eating disorder treatment team.

The assessments from each team member are reviewed with our entire clinical staff and used in developing a customized treatment plan.

Multi-Disciplinary Eating Disorder Treatment Team

  • Our experienced team includes:
  • Primary Therapist (Ph.D)
  • Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Psychiatrist (MD)
  • Internal Medicine Physician (MD)
  • Registered Dietitian (RD)

Close collaboration among the medical, clinical and support staff has proven highly effective in providing the most effective treatment.

Eating Disorder with Dual-Diagnosis

It is our experience that a high number of people who receive treatment for an eating disorder are also dealing with a second diagnosis such as Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Self-harm, or Addiction. Often, the second diagnosis is uncovered in the course of treatment. We simultaneously treat dual diagnosis to provide the most effective treatment.

We Address Family Issues

We know that the person who comes to Canopy Cove is not the only one affected by the disorder. Very often other family members have been impacted. This is why our treatment is comprehensive and includes weekly family therapy and education.

Our family therapists interact with the clients as well as family members, facilitating an understanding of eating disorders and focusing on topics such as communication, conflict resolution, anger management, and restoring broken relationships. For out-of-town family members, we offer teleconference calls. This comprehensive approach is a key contributor to our success rates.

Home-Like Setting

Our campus has an adult women’s home and an adolescent home for females. Both homes provide a comfortable setting in a safe nurturing environment. Program sizes are kept small to ensure that each client is able to receive the highest level of care.  Canopy Cove is located in a private and peaceful setting among 55 acres of rolling hills, huge oak trees and open fields dotted with grazing horses. The tranquil campus provides an ideal spot for restoration and recovery.

Equine Therapy

We include horses in the recovery process which is known to enhance the clinical outcomes. There are often limits to how much can be learned, explored and understood through a single type of therapy including talk therapy. Expressive therapy, such as equine therapy, offers unique opportunities for growth.

Continuity of Care

We offer three levels of care to allow clients to maintain continuity of care as they make progress in recovery and are able to step down to a new program.

We offer:

Smaller Group Size

It is our experience that the best results are achieved when the group size is kept small so that each person is able to contribute and participate. We avoid large groups because often only a few people in the group will receive the focused attention needed for recovery. Our smaller groups provide a higher ratio of therapists to clients and foster an environment of trust. To ensure the highest quality care, we limit group size to 4 to 10 people.

Treatment Philosophy

Our program utilizes The Recovery Model which is based on the understanding that full recovery from an Eating Disorder is possible. The Recovery Model identifies the eating disorder as a symptom of deeper, unresolved issues. We assist clients in identifying and resolving the underlying causes of the eating disorder as well as developing a more balanced relationship with food. Canopy Cove is a Non-Denominational Christian-Based Center. Our goal is to provide compassionate care in a positive and nurturing environment. We are open to all faiths and we warmly accept all clients including those who do not identify with a specific belief system.

Our Founder and Our History:

Dr. Lynda Brogdon is a licensed psychologist with 25 years’ experience specializing in eating disorder treatment (Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating) and co-existing dual-diagnosis including Diabetes.

She is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals as well as a Certified Equine-Assisted Psychotherapist. Dr. Brogdon has a deep concern for those who struggle with Eating Disorders and is a gift to all who visit Canopy Cove.

As a certified diabetes educator, Dr. Brogdon specialized in providing treatment to those dealing with diabetes. She served as a psychological consultant for the Diabetes Center at Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center. She was also instrumental in developing the psychosocial program utilized by both the inpatient and outpatient units at Tallahassee Memorial.

Shortly after opening her private practice, individuals struggling with eating disorders began to present for treatment. Recognizing the need for specialized treatment for this group of people was easy to assess, yet, after an extensive search, she was unable to locate a high-quality program to whom referrals could be made. Therefore, Dr. Brogdon began a pursuit of knowledge that could be useful in helping those with Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorders. Becoming certified as an Eating Disorder Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and joining associations committed to helping those struggling with these disorders, became the foundation of her new focus.

Recognizing the increasing need for greater levels of care, Dr. Brogdon established Canopy Cove Eating Disorder Treatment Center in 1990 and expanded treatment to include residential treatment, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient. She has a deep understanding of Eating Disorders and the complexities of treating co-existing dual diagnosis.
